How to choose a padel racket
Shape decides how the racket plays before any other spec does. A round-head racket has its sweet spot in the centre of the face, which makes it the most forgiving shape and the obvious choice for a first racket. Teardrop rackets shift the sweet spot slightly upward - a balanced compromise between power and control that suits most intermediate players. Diamond-shape rackets move the sweet spot near the top of the head, generating more power on smashes but demanding cleaner ball-striking; pick a diamond only once you're confident with your swing mechanics.
Weight and balance matter for your wrist. Light rackets (360-370g) are easier to swing through a long match and reduce wrist fatigue, but they transfer less power on the smash. Heavier rackets (375-385g) hit harder but tire the arm faster - over a three-set match that trade-off is real. If you already play tennis or squash, you'll adapt to a heavier racket quickly; newcomers to racket sports should start lighter.
Core material affects feel more than marketing suggests. Soft EVA cores give a cushioned, arm-friendly response favoured by intermediate players and anyone with existing elbow or shoulder issues. Hard EVA cores transmit more power but feel harsher on off-centre hits. Foam cores sit between the two and work well for beginners still finding their timing. The face material (fibreglass vs carbon fibre) changes durability and bite on the ball - carbon faces last longer and grip the ball better but cost roughly 40-60% more.
