FAQs

For a new English willow bat: a mallet for knocking in, raw linseed oil (unless pre-oiled), anti-scuff edge and face tape, a toe guard, and a spare grip. A bat care kit bundles these together and is typically cheaper than buying each item individually.
Replace your bat grip when it loses tackiness, wears through at the top-hand position, or splits. For a regular club cricketer, this is usually once per season. Fresh grips take five minutes to fit with a gripping cone and transform handle feel.
Wooden mallets are traditional and give firmer impact - the standard for full knocking-in. Rubber mallets give a softer impact that's useful for initial knocking-in on a fresh face and for the edges. Many players use both during the knock-in process.
Anti-scuff tape extends bat life significantly by reducing surface damage from ball impacts on the face and edges. Most new bats benefit from tape on the edges and toe; some players tape the full face. Tape adds very little weight and is easy to replace.
